Dr. Charlynn Small, PhD, LCP, CEDS-S Speaks co-sponsored by EQUIP, Center for Discovery, Reasons Eating Disorder Center, Alsana, and SF Bay Area iaedp™ Chapter
You are invited to “Black Women with Eating Disorders: Clinical Implications and Best Practices for Treatment” presented by Dr. Charlynn Small, PhD, LCP, CEDS-S and co-sponsored by EQUIP, Center for Discovery, Reasons Eating Disorder Center, Alsana, and SF Bay Area iaedp™ Chapter. This event will be presented online.
This presentation will discuss clinical implications and best practices for treatment when working with black women with eating disorders.
Description
Race is a powerful demographic, encompassing everything from social groups to cultural symbols and traditions. Absent from the literature are uniform recommendations for critically leveraging identity during counseling. In this presentation, you will learn about cultural and risk factors unique to Black persons in the treatment sphere, as well as understand critical issues that clinicians must be aware of to effectively treat and care for Black persons with eating disorders.
Learning Objectives
Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Identify three risk factors unique to Black persons and explain how they can influence the development of eating disorders. Participants will also be able to apply the information to facilitate assessment and for diagnostic decision-making.
2. Recognize that Black women are less likely than their White peers to receive referrals or to self-refer for treatment on the basis of current diagnostic criteria and explain why obtaining additional information regarding cultural factors for use with these measures is recommended.
3. Explain why therapists should not ignore, marginalize, or minimize racial differences for fear of being offensive or perceived as prejudice, because issues relating to racial differences do impact eating disorder onset, diagnosis and course of treatment.
