MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVES: THE IMPACT OF COLORISM, MICROAGGRESSIONS AND TRAUMA

ABSTRACT:

Despite increased awareness of the prevalence of eating disorders in multicultural populations, there are many who still struggle in silence. The goal of this workshop is to explore how to better identify and treat African-Americans and Jamaicans who have an ED, and how to best support clinicians in serving multicultural populations.

OBJECTIVES:
As a result of this presentation participants will be able to:

1. Recognize three unique aspects of ED presentation in African Americans and Jamaicans.
2. Describe the role of culture in facilitating the obstruction of treatment.
3. Define micro-aggressions, and identify three types of transgressions; identify themes of racial micro-aggressions; and describe techniques to empower patients and families.

TIMELINE:

First Hour: Background info re: the impact of stigma, colonialism, racism, attachment and trauma on the development of eating disorders in African-Americans and Jamaicans.

Second Hour: Unique presentations on microaggressions and colorism. Presentation of tools that can be used by providers and therapists who want to work with multicultural populations.

Third Hour: Case presentations and discussion regarding ways to individualize treatment.

BIOS:

Paula Edwards-Gayfield, MA, LPCS, LPC, NCC, CEDS, serves as a Regional Assistant Vice-President at The Renfrew Center. She received her Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She is a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (iaedp).

Carolyn Coker Ross, MD, MPH, CEDS, specializes in eating disorders and addictions. A graduate of Andrew Weil’s fellowship in Integrative Medicine, her latest book is The Food Addiction Recovery Workbook. Dr. Ross is the CEO of The Anchor Program™, an online coaching program for binge eating disorder.

Caryl James Bateman, PhD, is a Clinical Psychologist and Eating Disorder Specialist in Jamaica. A Senior Lecturer and the Psychology Unit Coordinator at the University of the West Indies, Mona, she works actively with the eating disorder population and has a passion for helping people of the Caribbean.
